Personal Goals Reflection

1.)http://aidanraquel.wikispaces.com/Personal+Goals
Quizstar, Glogstar and Scribd are all great resources. They are all very easy to use and their websites even easier to explore. Glogstar is such a creative way to display information. You can make collaborative posters on anything as teachers to help assist/ be an introduction to a lesson. Or even just have it on the projector/smart board screen while teaching. It is a way to display information in a way that keeps the kids attention. There are many frames and themes to choose from to add to the vividness of the slide. And it is so easy to use that I would be able to use it in my classroom of preschoolers and also teach them how to use it for different lessons, projects or activities going on throughout the year. You can incorporate different languages for a language lesson and glogstar just makes the pictures pop and come to life with the different frames and colors. I really liked using this program and I hope you enjoy my glogstar poster displayed on my wiki. I still think that quizstar is such an amazing resource for the classroom. If I was to use quiz star in the classroom I would be able to make up my own quizzes for my students and document that they took the quiz and review their answers and what not. I can make it that much more exciting for the students and for myself to make up the quizzes by adding pictures, music and other multimedia to my quizzes. This program is interactive and creative. I am bilingual. I speak Spanish and English so I really enjoy the fact that quizstar can make the quizzes in multiple languages. This allows me to broaden the culture of my students through the use of different languages. If we were having a Spanish lesson that day. I could make a quiz in Spanish and English; which is a new and innovative way for the students to take the quiz. Learning doesn’t always have to be repetitive and boring. And quizstar is a resource that proves that. I also like the autonomy it gives the students by allowing the students to complete their quiz and then review it after. I really like the features that quizstar has to offer and I think is a resource that I can use as an advantage for myself as a teacher and even more for my students. Technology in the classroom is becoming more and more advanced and I believe this program quizstar is an example of that. Even though the quiz I made was simple and just a way to show my knowledge of the program, quizstar can be used as such a resource and beyond. It is really a great program to incorporate into the classroom and super easy to use. Scribd was also a very easy tool to use. And the program is so up to date that people can add comments to your documents and read them in real time. I think this is a great place to post lesson plans so that I would be able to get feedback and comments on what other people thought about the lesson, what I can do to improve the lesson and general as well as specific feedback on any documents I submit. A very useful tool for educators. I will be going back to use all of these programs in my future classroom.

This assignmenmt taught me how to just use these resources to the best of my ability and just keep on learning about more resources that i can add to my classroom to help the students and let them get the most out of what i am teaching to them.

Final Reflection of Course

Aidan-Meghann Chambers
CT 243
Final Reflection
My goal for this course was to learn how to better use the computer for the benefit of my future classroom. And I definitely feel that this was accomplished. I am leaving this class with more knowledge on resources and programs that I can use when I become a teacher than I ever thought I would. And so many of the resources I can see myself using in the future. Another one of my goals was to learn more about internet safety. This goal was also accomplished. Not only can I see myself using these some of these resources in my future classroom but also my present life. I can use them in other classes to present various types of information. I can use the things I learned about Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel from the MS Screen casts on research papers, presentations and sorting information. There are so ways I can use these programs as a resource to my ho0mework, class work and future classroom. My major goal above all was to open my eyes to a new way of using computers. And that goal was certainly accomplished as well.
Just a couple of the programs that helped me accomplish this and were my favorites were: 1.) Quiz star; I still think that quiz star is such an amazing resource for the classroom. I speak Spanish and English so I really enjoy the fact that quiz star can make the quizzes in multiple languages. This allows me to broaden the culture of my students through the use of different languages. If we were having a Spanish lesson that day, I could make a quiz in Spanish and English, which would be a great way for the students to reinforce what they just learned by taking the quiz. Learning doesn’t always have to be repetitive and boring. And quiz star is a resource that proves that. I also like the autonomy it gives the students by allowing the students to complete their quiz and then review it after. I really like the features that quiz star has to offer and I think is a resource that I can use as an advantage for myself as a teacher and even more for my students. Technology in the classroom is becoming more and more advanced and I believe this program quiz star is an example of that. 2.) Digital Storytelling; I would implement a digital story to introduce a lesson or an add-on onto a different lesson. I feel that as a teacher, I can definitely use digital storytelling to my advantage to help present material in a new and innovative way. And the pictures will definitely catch and keep the attention of children especially the 3 and 4 yr olds I will be teaching. The music is a great way to get the kids into the lesson and make learning that much more fun! Photo story 3 made it so easy to add the pictures, music and other audio and make them into a story. The music/ transitions actually make the photos come to life and makes it very enjoyable to watch and listen to. I believe I will have the resources, skills (those I learned in this class plus creativity) and time to implement a resource like this in my classroom. These are only a couple of the programs/resources I learned how to use myself and learned how teach others how to use it.
This course helped me to learn that the computer can be used for so much more than just going on face book or checking my email. It can be used to my advantage and in so many ways to benefit myself and bring out my creativity in my future classroom.

Digital Storytelling Reflection

If i could do anything differently it would be to incorporate the music from the countries/cultures i portrayed in my digital story into the digital story itself. And when a child came up from that particular country for the music from that country to play. And also at the end of the digital story to get an audio of people that speak different languages to say the word "friendship" in their native language. Just to add to that theme of different cultures but unity of friendship and that even though we may look different, wear different clothes and east different foods we are all special and can put those difference aside , be friends and talk about our different cultures with our friends.
I would implement a digital story to introduce a lesson or an add-on onto a different lesson. I feel that as a teacher, i can definitely use digital storytelling to my advantage to help present material in an new and innovative way. And the pictures will definitely catch and keep the attention of children especially the 3 and 4 yr olds i will be teaching. The music is a great way to get the kids into the lesson and make learning that much more fun ! Photostory 3 made it so easy to add the pictures, music and other audio and make them into a story. The music/ transitions actually make the photos come to life and makes it very enjoyable to watch and listen to.I believe i will have the resources, skills(those i learned in this class plus creativity) and time to implement a resource like this in my classroom.
I definitely enjoyed doing this project. It's always fun to talk about something you love and teach others about it in the form of a lesson. Just like animoto i enjoyed adding the pictures, text , and music. And to basically tell a story. I also like the aspect of adding my own voice or the voice of others as sort of a narrator and in helping my students make their own digital story give them autonomy and let them narrate their stories with their own voice.

Cyber bullying

What is your reaction to the Cyberbullying videos that you viewed this week? What is the teacher’s role in preventing/eliminating Cyberbullying?

The cyberbullying videos that i viewed on the websites you provided for us actually really touched me. Even though i know it happens everyday. Sometimes you to not realize how hurtful it can be to those it is happening to and their families . I also really liked the video "Cyberbullying: You Can't Take It Back" where a teen that participated in the act of rating his fellow classmates feels the regret of his actions. And shows the remorse he feels for doing something so degrading. At first i didn't understand how this was a form of cyberbullying but after watching the entire video and the other videos as well i began to understand more about cyberbullying. How this "use" of the internet is used to harass and bully people and how damaging it can be to the victims being harassed or bullied but to those involved in the acts as well.
I think the teacher's role in preventing/eliminating cyberbullying is to first instill an atmosphere of respect. Respect your other classmates, speak nicely, and be kind to one another. Because after watching these videos i can see that the people that cyberbully don't respect the victim, they don honor their privacy, and in the case of the "rating "story dont respect others differences. There are many reasons why people bully. Some because they have been bullied themselves and are trying to retaliate, some have serious problems- personality and medically related, some do just to be popular. But no matter what these reasons are no one should ever put someone else in this predicament or situation and i think teachers instilling that main theme of respect can have a major impact on how the kids see their classmates and act towards their classmates. When a teacher hears one kid putting another kid down or a group of kids putting one kid down, she should dtep in immediately and show them that behavior like that will not be tolerated or accepted EVER.Let them know that it is cruel to tease others and to hurt others physically and through the internet. Bullying through the internet can hurt someone emotionally just as much as a someone beating someone up physically. Let them know if they are being cyberbullied or know someone who is to not be ashamed to tell their parents or teachers. And also if they are old enough to have emails to delete emails that are weird or make them feel uncomfortable and that also goes for chat rooms.

Copyright, Fair Use, Plagiarism, etc 11/16

You can start off by educating yourself on copyright laws, fair use and the legalities of using pictures, audio, etc that is not yours. Educate yourself on how to practice safe, legal and responsible use of info and technology. I must know the information first before i teach my students on how to properly copyright and fair use. After reading the information i see that when you are unsure about whether something is copyrighted or you're not sure how to cite the information, you should ask. Copyrights and Copying Wrongs, the first part in the Education World series on copyright and fair use, set out a good rule of thumb for using copyrighted material -- when in doubt, ask permission (Starr ,2010).

Fair use is not a license to steal. It was created for educational use. The fair use doctrine was created to allow the use of copyrighted works for criticism and commentary, parody, news reporting, research and scholarship, and classroom instruction. Many educators, however, interpret the fair use doctrine as freedom to use any copyrighted materials as long as their use is restricted to instructional purposes (Starr, 2010). Educators must have a positive attitude toward respecting people for their works and not taking what is not yours without giving credit to whom credit is due. They themselves must set an example. (For example; when i use pictures in a lesson i will let the students know where I got them from, and give credit to the author, painter, creator, etc). Even under fair use there are certain limitations to what you can copy. So as educators we must read up on those limitations also.
Those guidelines allow educators, under most circumstances, to copy
• a single chapter from a book
• an excerpt from a work that combines language and illustrations, such as a children's book, not exceeding two pages or 10 percent of the work, whichever is less
• a poem of 250 words or less or up to 250 words of a longer poem
• an article, short story, or essay of 2,500 words or less, or excerpts of up to 1,000 words or 10 percent of a longer work, whichever is less; or
• a single chart, graph, diagram, drawing, cartoon, or picture from a book, periodical, or newspaper.

The guidelines do not allow users to :
• make multiple copies of different works as a substitute for the purchase of books or periodicals
• copy the same works for more than one semester, class, or course
• copy the same work more than nine times in a single semester
• use copyrighted work for commercial purposes
• use copyrighted work without attributing the author (Starr,2010).
Those limitations extend to music, audio and other forms of technology also. The bottom line is to educate yourself as a teachers before you educate your students. And have a positive attitude about it. Your students feed off of your enthusiasm and you don’t want to give them any misinformation.

Let them know the facts; the facts about copyright, fair use, and plagiarism. Support your kids to use resources on the internet respectfully and appropriately. And teach them about the consequences if you don’t. Allow yourself to be approachable in the case that they do commit an act of plagiarism allow them to come to you and be honest and be honest in return. Inform them again of what they did, why it is wrong, how it is wrong and help them make steps toward not making those same mistakes in the future.

Concept Mapping Reflection

The software that I used was bubble.us. The software was easy to use when i was making the concept map. The hardest thing for me was figuring out how to embed and import and export the image from one place to another. I used google as a resource on how to do this. It was like a FAQs page about the program (bubble.us).It took me a little extra time to figure out how to export the image and embed the image , etc. But typing in the information was easy. And once i got the hang of it the rest was pretty easy also. I would use it again for my own use. It is a great brainstorming tool as well as a great outlining tool. It gets you to focus on one topic and is interactive because it allows you to create more bubbles for subcategories and detail.
As a teacher it is important to braninstorm and get your ideas out there on paper. The ideas must be clear and concept mapping can be used to clarify your idea making it easier for others to understand and learn from. It is also a more interactive and visual way of seeing things instead of just typing it or wrioting it out. This is allowing us to use the internet in yet another inbteractive way in order to learn how to use it and soon teach others using programs like these.

Concept Mapping: Developmental Milestones of Emotional Development

Above is my concept map.

Explanation:
. I am an early childhood education major. And in my classes i learn alot about cognitive, physical and emotional attributes and qualities that are apart of life even at this very young age.One of my favorite topics that i learned in class was the development of emotions in babies from the time their born till they are 2 yrs. Emotions are innate, discrete from one another from a very early age and each emotion is believed to be linked with a specific and distinctive set of bodily and facial reactions. So even from this early age- the emotions that continue to grow within us until we are old start. And from this it is believed that emotions have 3 internally interacting dimensions: 1.)the conscious feeling or emotional experience, 2.)The process in the brain and nervous system (this is where cognitive and emotional link up. 3.) the observable expressive patterns or reactions. It is amazing that even from that age out emotions are already forming and can be observed by parents, teachers and others around. These milestones dont apply to all babies of course because every baby nd child is unique and different in their own way. The emotional level of one is not the same as the other. Yet these milestones are a set of functional skills or age-specific tasks that most children can do at a certain age range. milestones are used by parents, doctors and teachers to help check how the child is developing. In my concept map my main topic was Developmental Milestones of Emotional Development(early childhood). The categories were the age ranges and the subcategories were the milestones that also serve as observable examples of the emotional development.

Internet Workshop reflection

Reflection

You must post on your blog with a reflection that responds to ALL of the following questions:

What did you find most difficult about this assignment and how did you overcome the challenge?
How can you apply the knowledge learned in this assignment in the future to your specialty/profession?
Briefly discuss the implications of this statement, "Students will become victims of the expansive dark side of the Internet unless we teach the critical thinking necessary to make meaning out of the overwhelming and potentially manipulative amount of information that is now available and growing every day" (November, 2010, p.27).

The hardest thing about this assignment for me was trying to figure out how i would help the students with ADHD complete this activity while making it just as enjoyable for them. I just remebered certain characteristics that kids with ADHD have and just conformed the lesson to help them out. For example they get distracted easily so during this activity and other time while learning i wouldnt put them near hallways or windows thus serving as an extra distraction for them.
I will be making lesson plans and activity plans for my students all the time, so this assignment was good for practice and a good example of what i will be doing in my profession as an early childhood education teacher.
That quote just pinpoints how dangerous the internbet can be if we dont guide them safely and teach them how to correctly and effectively use the internet. The internet can be used to find extract alot of information and can be used as an interactive tool also for kids but it much be properly used by them and we the teachers in the classrooms are there to show them how.

Jo Cool/Jo Fool Web Site

After going through the cybertour i got a 15/20 on the cyberquiz. I think that this is a great interactive website for students. It teaches them how to surf the web safely and even this activity is for kids. I definitely learned a few things about the internet that i wasnt taught and didnt know before. I like how they put all different types of websites that chidlren may come upon. These situations are intended as springboards to help kids surf wisely and begin to think critically about online privacy, online marketing, responsible Internet use, authenticating online resources and Internet safety.(Steeves &Tallim, 2010.). I liked both the pages for kids and teachers. The page for kids was short concise and right to the point in language that was easy to read and understand. The teachers page was even better. Very detailed and filled with useful information, telling teachers how they could make this Jo Cool/Jo Fool into a lessonplan. The website gave a great example of how this can be an interactive activity causing the kids to learn very useful information and be careful when surfing the internet at their homes. For each scenario, students are asked to consider some key questions:

What kind of Web site is this? What is its purpose: To inform? To sell? To entertain? To persuade?

Is it a commercial Web site? A personal home page? An educational site? How can students tell?

What decision does Jo have to make?

What should Jo look out for? What should he or she take into account before acting?

What's the "big picture" here? Is this a privacy or safety issue? A matter of authentication? Does this relate to good citizenship online?

Does Jo make the right decision? Why or why not?
Students can write their answers in media journals and compare them with classmates after viewing each of the Web scenarios, or when the entire module has been completed. (Steeves &Tallim, 2010.).

I think that these arew great questions to have the students ask themselves. To even take it a step further. we can pick some real-life websites adn discuss the advantages and disadvantages of these websites. I definitely think this is a great learning tool.

quizstar

I still think that quizstar is such an amazing resource for the classroom. If i was to use quiz star in the classroom i would be able to make up my own quizzes for my students and document that they took the quiz and review their answers and what not. I can make it that much more exciting for the students and for myself to make up the quizzes by adding pictures , music and other multimedia to my quizzes. This program is interactive and creative.
I am bilingual. I speak spanish and english so i really enjoy the fact that quizstar can make the quizzes in multiple languages. This allows me to broaden the culture of my students through the use of different languages. If we were having a spanish lesson that day. I could make a quiz in spanish and english. Which is an new and innovative way for the students to take the quiz. Learning doesnt always have to be repetitive and boring. And quizstar is a resource that proves that. I also like the autonomy it gives the students by allowing the students to complete their quiz and then review it after. I really like the features that quizstar has to offer and i think is a resource that i can use as an advantage for myself as a teacher and even more for my students. Technology in the classroom is becoming more and more advanced and i believe this program quizstar is an exexample of that.

What are a few of the similarities and differences between... Internet Project, Internet Workshop, Internet Inquiry, and WebQuest

SIMILARITIES&DIFFERENCES

Some key similarities of these models are the use of the internet to access unlimited resources, the use of the inquiry-based approach to construct understanding, the need for information literacy to be successful, and the potential to incorporate a more active learning process in the classroom. For example Internet Workshop has many variations. Generally, though, it contains these steps:
1. Locate a site, or several sites, on the Internet with content related to a classroom unit of instruction
and set a bookmark for the location(s).
2. Develop an activity requiring students to use the site(s).
3. Assign this activity to be completed during the week.
4. Have students share their work, questions, and new insights at the end of the week during a
workshop session.(Leu 2000).I found this truly creative. One key benefit in today’s classroom that is also shared across these models is the ability to link to an informational mode familiar to students.

The key differences I noted centered around independence required / allowed in the process. Some of these models allow students a great deal more freedom. For example, webquests tend to prescribe the inquiries to be made and the sites to be used in the research. This may make the webquest model more ideal for a classroom or individual student that needs precise direction. Internet Workshop, one designed around the three themes identified in this emerging framework of how literacy is changing. Because Internet Workshop fits easily into the instructional schedule of any classroom, it can be used without sacrificing another element of the curriculum. In the time it takes to read this article you could learn how to use Internet Workshop in your classroom, preparing students for the literacy future they deserve.(Leu 2002)

There are also differences in the degree of open publication of student work and thereby feedback potential from the audience outside the classroom. This may actually be a benefit for fragile students who have not yet developed the sense of confidence that comes from success.

Wikis vs. Blogs

A blog is a sort of journal that is online. Most people like to update it daily or weekly or whenever they desire. A wiki is an online resource also and is meant for anyone to update in real time. A blog is owned by an individual whereas wiki is being updated by many people in a group.
For blogs, the timeline is more important. For wikis, when an article was published matters less, because articles are supposed to be updated as new information becomes available. Blog posts are usually one persons' opinion, followed optionally by comments. Wiki articles represent consensus, but can have an associated discussion/talk page.
A wiki is a superset of a blog. A wiki can host a blog, but not viceversa.
A wiki allows multiple users to create, modify and organize web page content in a collaborative manner.
A blog is a Web site that maintains ongoing posts. A blog is frequently updated,a personal Web site featuring diary-type commentary and links to articles or other Web sites.

Wiki:

- Multiple Authors,
- Edited by a group or team,
- Contains links to other Wiki pages,
- Continuousy changing and growing rapidly,

Blogs:

- Usually a single author. Sometimes can have multiple contributors,
- Author posts, user comments,
- Opinion Sharing ,
- One-to-many content.

Create your own video slideshow at animoto.com.

What do you think makes a good classroom web site and/or teacher ePortfolio? Provide specific examples. Should the teacher integrate the latest technologies (e.g. from Horizon Report) into his/her instruction?

You need to make sure it draws attention so i think bright colors or a black background with white writing will definitely grab the attention of others looking at the website. It needs to consist of information that the people reading the website will be interested in. And in a language that everyone will understand so be intellectual in your speaking but also simple, because you dont want people to be confused. Also make sure the website or eteacher Portfolio flows.. choppy information and transitions can also cause people to become disinterested and/or confused. The reading also mentioned  the website being interactive, including WebQuests, electronic communities, and other activities for students . This is  great resourse in keeping the attention of the students. And that is one of the major goals of the website. And make sure above all of the things i just mentioned that you are appropriate and professional. You can have fun with it but make sure you are professional . I think the Horizon report is a great tool. It  provides a snapshot of tech tools that are “likely to have a large impact on teaching, learning, or creative inquiry on college and university campuses within the next five years. And after skimming through and looking at examples from the report i see that this is true and i think it is a great and innovative tool to use when making websites in a new and better way.
